Today we ask the wt360 SUNNY robot about how Spring is trending and this VERY WET Memorial Day weekend in the East.
Spring (Mar-May) got off to a good start in late March-early April with 3 straight warmer/drier weeks for the U.S. overall which is great for Spring merchandise sales, but then a downturn. We had 4 straight cooler weeks through middle May and now this past week finally turned much hotter.
Unfortunately, MUCH WETTER as well. This time of year, hotter/drier is the most ideal for Spring seasonal sales and store traffic.
wt360 tracks how weather influences over 218 seasonal categories and 100 equities, and unfortunately
this Memorial Day weekend is a big downer with the #1 wettest in over 41 years.
This will trump the milder temperatures vs last year's very cool period.
Overall, a very negative weekend for the Eastern half of the U.S., the West is certainly best.
Last week (17-23 May) across the World shows the U.S. trending +3F warmer than last year and 13th warmest in 41 years. The season's first major heat-wave hit the East with near 100 temperatures midweek in the Northeast. A strong cold front moved in Thursday and sent temperatures crashing over 40 degrees by the Memorial Day weekend. Hot 90F days were up +5% vs LY and 6th most in 41 years. Unfortunately, rainfall was up +35% and the #1 wettest in over 41 years for the U.S. overall. Canada finally had a warmer/drier week YOY helping to bring a much needed bounce in Spring sales, while Europe was warmer and wetter. China was the #1 wettest in over 41 year, while Brazil was very cool.
U.S. Severe Weather had an uptick with 99 tornadoes, 333 hail events and 821 wind events over the past week.
Another lull in activity for the week ahead.
This week (24-30 May) shows the U.S. trending +3.2F warmer than last year, warmest in 6 years and 9th warmest in 41 years, but much of that heat is in the Northern Rockies and Northern Plains. Cooler Northeast, South and West Coast. Hot 90F days are down -55% vs last year, least in 27 years and 5th least in 41 years. This will bring demand for hot categories like AC down after the surge last week. Rainfall again up +9% vs LY, wettest in 4 years and 4th wettest in 41 years for the U.S. overall. More drought relief for the Southeast and Middle Atlantic.
Next week (31 May - 6 Jun) shows a pretty dramatic cooling trend with the U.S. overall -0.6F cooler than last year, coolest in 9 years and 20th coolest in 41 years. The heat remains in the Northwest. Hot 90F days again down -60% vs last year, least in 21 years and 3rd least in 41 years. This will have a big negative impact on AC, fans, auto batteries and other categories that benefit from hot weather. Rainfall down -20% nationally, least in 3 years and 7th least in 41 years will help a bit, although it remains wet in the Southeast.
The World 2-Week Temperature Outlook (24 May - 6 Jun) shows the biggest warmer temperature anomalies in the Plains, Central Canada, Western Europe and India. The Southeast U.S. and Eastern Europe are the cooler spots.
The World 2-Week Precipitation Outlook (24 May - 6 Jun) shows much above average rainfall for the Southern half of the U.S., all of Brazil and Eastern Australia. The World overall is having the wettest May in 22 years, on top of a very wet May last year.
