Weather Outlook for Thanksgiving 2020

Happy Monday! :) Only 27 days until Winter...32 days until Christmas!

One thing you'll hear mentioned a lot this Winter is a STRONG Polar Vortex which means most of the really cold Arctic air will remain bottled up in the Arctic much of the Winter ahead. The 14-day animation shows the very strong symmetrical Polar Vortex with some glancing blows in Greenland. When it breaks apart, that is when some of the Arctic air can invade the middle latitudes. We'll have a few minor intrusions this year in the U.S., but not many or prolonged.



Last week (15-21 November) across the World shows Canada and Brazil were two areas trending cooler than a year ago, while most other major regions trended much warmer, including China that trended the warmest in over 35 years.



Snow Cover across the U.S. was way down from last year when 22% of the country had snow on the ground, this year only 9% of the U.S. covered in snow going into the start of the holiday shopping season, the least in 8 years. Average would be near 16.4%. Milder and less snowy trends are historically favorable for store traffic, but with COVID many of us will continue to shop on line. Winter seasonal category sales will remain soft across the U.S.



This week (23-29 November) will again trend warmer than last year, 3.3F warmer, warmest in 3 years, 6th warmest in 35+ years for the U.S. overall. Rainfall is the most in 6 years, 7th wettest in 35 years, while snowfall is down a whopping 92% vs last year's very snowy end to November, least in 3 years, 4th least in 35+ years.



The 6-day snowfall outlook shows some snow for the Upper Midwest and Rocky Mountains, but not much for the U.S. overall.



Next week (30 November - 6 December) shows some cooler trends for the South Central and Southeast, but the U.S. overall still trending a bit warmer than a year ago, warmest in 3 years and 12th warmest of the past 35+ years. Wetter than last year and 12th wettest of the past 35 years while snowfall is still way down, 69% less than last year, least in 3 years and 10th least in 35+ years.



The 2-week World outlook (23 Nov - 6 Dec) shows the Polar Vortex pretty much bottle up in the Arctic and Greenland. Much milder across North America including Canada, Australia and very warm by Siberia standards. Cool spots relatively to average are Summer in Brazil and across Africa.
