Captain's Log

Happy Sunday! :)

A recap of last week around the World shows the U.S. trending -3.7F colder than last year, coldest in 8 years, 7th coldest in 37 years with below average national temperatures. Great for Winter clearance sales and seasonal merchandise. CLICK ON IMAGES FOR A LARGER VIEW.

log 1-min

Rainfall was +49% more than last year, 10th wettest in 37 years while snowfall was -2% less than a year ago still 7th most in 37 years and well above average with the big Central U.S. storm into the Great Lakes.

Canada, China, Australia, India and Brazil also trended colder than a year ago.

log 2-min

This time last year a prolonged Polar Vortex invaded the U.S. and Mexico, not this time. There are signs it will bring very cold weather to Alaska next week and that will eventually make it's way back into the lower 48 late month into March!

log 3-min

This week (6-12 Feb) shows the U.S. much warmer than last year, +11.1F warmer than a year ago, warmest in 4 years and 13th warmest of the past 37 years with above average national temperatures. Rainfall the least in 37 years trending down 87% vs last year and well below average nationally. A milder and dry week will benefit very early Spring merchandise sales. Snowfall also the least in 24 years, 2nd least in 37 and down 87% vs last year.

log 4-min

The 6-day snowfall outlook (6-11 Feb) shows the lingering Lake Effect snow with the exiting Alberta Clipper, but again very little snowfall nationally, least since 1998 for this period.

log 5-min

Season to date snowfall shows the heavier snow in some unusual spots like coastal New Jersey with much less here in Eastern PA. Every state has had some snow this year, including the high volcanic mountains in Hawaii and extreme Northwest Florida. Winter to date snowfall is 10% more than last year, most in 4 years, but still below average nationally for the 1 December to 6 February period.

log 6-min

Next Week (13-19 Feb) again shows the milder trends with the U.S. overall trending a whopping 12.8F warmer than last year, warmest in 4 years which is 17th coldest of the past 37 years with average national temperatures. The next bigger storm is possible around Valentine's Day with rainfall +11% more than a year ago, most in 3 years and 6th most in 37 years. Snowfall less than last year but likely to trend above average with the potential bigger storm in the Northeast.

log 7-min

With cold air clashing with the warmer/moist air, we do expect tornadic activity to be 15% more than a year ago for 2022. The season is already off to a fast start and could get very destructive in March and April with a colder Spring season.

log 8-min

The 2-week World aggregate forecast (6-19 Feb) shows a milder trend across the U.S. and Europe with cold invading China and Alaska.
