Captain's Log 13 Feb '22 Roller Coaster Weather Continues

Captain's Log

Happy Super Bowl Sunday! :) Guys, hopefully you didn't forget tomorrow is Valentine's Day! Thank me later for the reminder.

The weather could be part of the headline for today's 56th Super Bowl with 84F temperatures expected making it the hottest Super Bowl since 1973, 49 years ago when it was also 84F and also in Los Angeles. CLICK ON IMAGES FOR A LARGER VIEW.

log 1

Last week across the World (6-12 Feb) shows the U.S. finally breaking a 4-week stretch of below normal temperatures with national temperatures trending 12.2F warmer than last year, warmest in 4 years and 9th warmest of the past 37 years. Rainfall was the least in 37 years, while snowfall was the least in 24 years. A warm/dry week is very favorable for store traffic and early Spring merchandise sales.

Canada, U.K., Europe, Russia also had much warmer temperatures while China, Australia, India and the Middle East were all much cooler.

log 2

This week (13-19 Feb) shows the roller coaster ride in temperatures continuing with a very cold start to the week in the Eastern U.S., but then another big warm up late in the week, similar to this past week. For the U.S. overall, the week trend 12.7F warmer than last year, warmest in 4 years but still 17th coldest of the past 37 years with slightly below average national temperatures. Rainfall 15% drier than a year ago, but still 12th wettest of the past 37 years. Not much snowfall trending down 86% from last year's snowiest week in 37 years. Need to watch the Southeast over the next couple weeks for the potential of severe thunderstorms and tornadoes.

log 3

The 6-day snowfall outlook shows national snowfall trending down 87% vs last year, 66% below average, least in 11 years and 6th least in 37 years. Late week another Midwest to Great Lakes moderate snow event will move in with some briefly colder weather toward the weekend.

log 4

Next week (20-26 Feb) shows a nation-wide warm up with the U.S. trending +1.2F warmer than last year, warmest in 4 years and 7th warmest in 37 years with above average national temperatures. These are favorable trends for overall store traffic and early Spring merchandise sales. Rainfall is +190% wetter than a year ago, most in 35 years with heavier rain and severe weather possible from Arkansas to New England. For now, snowfall looks to be the least in 22 years.

log 5

The 2-week World forecast shows colder weather returning to Alaska, Canada and continuing across China. Very warm in Russia for this time of year.

log 6

If you think it's been a roller coaster ride of a February for the Central and Eastern U.S., you're right! Temperatures here in Eastern PA have been making wild swings from 9 to 54 in just a couple days and then back to 10F, then back to near 60. That looks to continue well into March, even middle April! We do expect a much colder/snowier March for much of the Eastern 2/3rds of the country, so enjoy these early tastes of Spring. Fortunately for Captain Kirk, the beach trip for Mrs. Simona Kirk was timed nearly perfectly with the 2nd hottest February 11th in 37 years! The next day we had 6" of snow. Hewwwwwwww! :)

Have a great week and don't forget to follow us on social media: Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Pinterest and Linkedin.
