Year-to-date rainfall across the U.S. is trending the driest in 13 years, -22% drier than last year, -7% below average and the 14th driest of the past 40 years nationally. It is particularly dry in the Southwest, Central Rockies and East Coast.
Wildfires numbers are the most in over 10 years, while acres burned is up +4% vs average with 988,319 acres burned so far this year. This will increase dramatically out West this Summer-Fall.
It was a fairly
active severe weather week adding 58 tornadoes since last week, 418 hail events and 664 high wind cases. Tornadoes and Wind are still trending the most in 14 years and hail cases the most in 8 years.
The 4-day severe storm outlook from NOAA shows some severe weather along the East coast today and then shifting back to West Texas on Monday.
Last week (27 Apr - 3 May) across the World shows the U.S. trending -0.4F cooler than last year but still 5th warmest of the past 40 years. Hot 90F days were down -19% vs last year, but 15th most in 40 years. Rainfall was down -15% vs last year, driest in 3 years but 20th wettest in 40 years. The cooler YOY trends stretched from Texas to the Northeast, likely impacting early Spring merchandise sales. It was very warm/dry across the U.K. which benefits all seasonal categories and consumable cold beverage categories. Europe was also warmer/drier while it was cooler and much wetter across Russia.
This week (4-10 May) shows an Omega-like blocking pattern across the U.S. with cooler weather stretching from the Southwest to New England. The U.S. overall trends -1.2F cooler than last year, coolest in 4 years and 18th warmest of the past 40 years (near average). Hot 90F days nationally are way down -77% vs last year, least in 12 years and 3rd least in 40 years. This will negatively impact hot seasonal categories like AC, cold beverages and pool supplies. Rainfall is down -7% vs last year, but still 7th wettest of the past 40 years nationally. Overall, this is a negative week to kick off Q2 for retailers.
Next week (11-17 May) the warmer conditions return with the U.S. trending +3.7F warmer than last year, warmest in 3 years and 4th warmest of the past 40 years. Despite the warmer conditions, hot 90F days are still down -11% vs last year, least in 4 years but 16th most of the past 40 years. Rainfall is down -26% vs LY, driest in 3 years and 15th driest of the past 40 years. This should help farmers wrap up planting the 2025 crops. Overall this is a stronger week for retail seasonal sales.
The World 2-week temperature outlook (4-17 May) shows the warmest conditions in the North Central U.S. and cooler in the South. Europe turns much cooler softening demand for Spring seasonal sales.
The World 2-week precipitation outlook (4-17 May) shows the heaviest rainfall from along the Gulf Coast and up the East Coast. Very dry conditions across Brazil and Northern Europe.
