2021 Weather Trends Across the World

Last week (28 Feb - 6 Mar) across the World shows the U.S. trending 2.8F cooler than last year but that's still 9th warmest of the past 36 years with above average national temperatures. CLICK ON IMAGES FOR A LARGER VIEW.



Rainfall was just 2% less than a year ago, driest in 3 years and 17th driest in 36 years with slightly below average rainfall. Snowfall was 58% less than last year and least in 21 years, 3rd least in 36 years, so much below average on the snow front.

Most areas around the World trended cooler, except in India where it was the warmest in 5 years. Warmer weather YOY is better for overall seasonal sales so a slower start.



U.S. Snow Cover this morning was much below the average and least in 5 years at just 18%. We will add some snow to the Rocky Mountains this week, especially Colorado.



U.S. Season to date (1 Sep - 7 Mar) snowfall is again trending 4% below average but 7% more than last year. March snowfall is off to a very slow start with 74% less than last year, 93% below average and least in 29 years.



U.S. Rainfall YTD is trending the least in 9 years with 21% less rainfall than last year and 13% below average. A trend likely to continue for much of 2021 with La Nina like conditions. The Southeast, Kentucky and parts of the Northwest are trending above average rainfall.



This Week (8-14 March) across the U.S. shows the first big surge of Spring-like conditions in the Eastern half of the country. While national temperatures trend -0.1F cooler than last year, it's still 7th warmest of the past 36 years with near record warmth in the Central U.S. Rainfall is the least in 3 years and 13th least of the past 36 years despite a big storm impacting the West and Rocky Mountains with heavy snow. Snowfall up 30% over last year but still below average nationally. Some risk for severe weather in the South Central States as the cold clashes with the warm.



It's that time of year...Spring ahead this weekend as Daylight Savings Time starts!



Next Week (15-21 March) shows the cooler weather sweeping across the entire U.S. with national temperatures tending -4.0F cooler than last year, coolest in 8 years and 9th coolest of the past 36 years. Wettest in 9 years with heavy rainfall for the Southeast and more flooding potential. There's a chance for a snow storm in the Northeast early in the week, for now a cold rain is most likely with national snowfall expected to be down 72% vs last year and 4th least in 36 years. Again, TBD with the Northeast snow storm threat.



So, while the calendar may say Spring arrives 20 March at 5:37am, the weather map may suggest otherwise.



The 2-week World aggregate forecast (8-21 March) shows the heart of the cold across Russia and continuing in Australia, while a big warm surge encompasses Central Africa into the Middle East, through India into China.
