2020 Polar Vortex Hits China & Japan

Happy Monday! :) Only 3 days, 14 hours until 2021!

If you like super cold weather, you'll have to look to China, Japan and parts of Siberia as the 2020 Polar Vortex splits a bit. CLICK ON IMAGES FOR A LARGER VIEW.



The U.S. will trend a bit cooler than last year, but still generally above average temperatures other than some short lived shots of cooler weather in the West and Central U.S.



Last week across (Dec 20-26) the World shows the U.S. trending 5.4F colder than last year, coldest in 4 years but still 14th warmest of the past 35 years and above average for the nation as a whole. 5% wetter than last year and 155% more snowfall, most in 3 years, but still below average on the snowfall front. Canada and China had similar temperatures to this time last year while Europe, Russia, Brazil and Australia were colder.

Snow cover across the U.S. is the least in 9 years with only 27% of the country blanketed in snow. Last year was 34% and average is 40% for the late December timeframe.



This week (28 Dec - 3 Jan) shows a warming trend in the Eastern U.S. but still 5.3F colder than last year, coldest in 3 years but 13th warmest of the past 35 years. Rainfall is excessive trending similar to last year's 2nd wettest conditions in 35 years, while snowfall is up 21% over last year, most in 3 years and above average with a system traversing the Central U.S.



The 6-day snowfall outlook shows a moderate snow event midweek in the Central U.S. and another system late week in the South Central U.S. Not much for the milder Northeast.

Next week (3-10 January) is just a bit colder than last year, coolest in 3 years, but still 9th warmest of the past 35 years. The cooler weather shifts toward the West.



The 2-week World outlook for 28 Dec - 10 January shows the influence of the Polar Vortex across Asia and parts of Southern Siberia. Western Europe is also on the cool side while Western Europe is warmer.
